Johan van der Hoven

Executive Mayor

Born in October 1953, Executive Mayor Johann van der Hoven served in the South African Police Service and through his hard work and dedication received many promotions and also completed his national diploma in police administration at Graaff-Reinett College.

In 1990, Johann was appointed as the liaison officer for the South African Police Service and International Observers. In October 2013, he became the general manager of Agriculture Community Development and in this position his duties were to prioritise both agricultural and community development.

This is where Johann’s passion for bettering the livelihood of the community started to take shape. This same passion caught our eye and after the 2016 Local Government Elections he became a councillor at the West Coast District Municipality.

Following the resignation of Mayor Rhenda Stephan, Johann picked up the baton and stated that he would like to continue the legacy of good clean governance in Matzikama Municipality. His goal is to build a strong, corruption-free and disciplined institution dedicated to service delivery and economic development for the poorest of the poor.

Among Johann’s focus areas are agriculture, tourism, and community and economic development for all.
